Problem #95 · October 30, 2026

Common fractions

How many containers are needed to pour 4124\frac{1}{2} litres of juice completely into containers each with a capacity of 34\frac{3}{4} litres?
  1. A6
  2. B3383\frac{3}{8}
  3. C12
  4. D5145\frac{1}{4}
  5. E3343\frac{3}{4}

WORKED EXAMPLE

Solution

To find the number of containers, the total volume is divided by the capacity of one container: 412=924\frac{1}{2}=\frac{9}{2} and 92:34=92⋅43=366=6\frac{9}{2}:\frac{3}{4}=\frac{9}{2}\cdot\frac{4}{3}=\frac{36}{6}=6. So 6 containers are needed.
