Fruit trees are planted on 35\frac{3}{5} of the orchard, and 56\frac{5}{6} of the fruit trees are apple trees. What part of the orchard do the apple trees occupy?
  1. A811\frac{8}{11}
  2. B1825\frac{18}{25}
  3. C730\frac{7}{30}
  4. D12\frac{1}{2}
  5. E113301\frac{13}{30}

WORKED EXAMPLE

Solution

To find a part of a part, the fractions are multiplied: 35⋅56=1530=12\frac{3}{5}\cdot\frac{5}{6}=\frac{15}{30}=\frac{1}{2}. If we cancel both occurrences of 5 with each other, we immediately get 36=12\frac{3}{6}=\frac{1}{2}.
