Problem #82 · October 17, 2026

EKUB — greatest common divisor and EKUK — least common multiple

Two containers hold 36 liters and 48 liters of milk, respectively. How many containers in total are needed to pour the milk out without mixing it and without a remainder into equal containers of the greatest volume?
  1. A4
  2. B7
  3. C12
  4. D14
  5. E84

WORKED EXAMPLE

Solution

The volume of the largest container equals EKUB(36;48)EKUB(36; 48): 36=22⋅3236 = 2^2 \cdot 3^2, 48=24⋅348 = 2^4 \cdot 3, so EKUB =22⋅3=12= 2^2 \cdot 3 = 12 liters. The number of containers: 36:12+48:12=3+4=736 : 12 + 48 : 12 = 3 + 4 = 7.
