Problem #44 · September 9, 2026

Percentages

The price of a television was reduced twice in succession by the same percentage, falling from 2 000 000 soums to 1 620 000 soums. What was the percentage reduction each time?
  1. A19%19\%
  2. B9,5%9{,}5\%
  3. C81%81\%
  4. D90%90\%
  5. E10%10\%

WORKED EXAMPLE

Solution

Let the price multiplier for each reduction be kk: 2 000 000⋅k2=1 620 0002\,000\,000 \cdot k^2 = 1\,620\,000, which gives k2=0,81k^2 = 0{,}81 and k=0,9k = 0{,}9. Thus, each time the price fell to 90%90\% of its previous value, so the discount was 100%−90%=10%100\% - 90\% = 10\%.
