Problem #37 · September 2, 2026

Divisibility rules

How many three-digit numbers of the form aba‾\overline{aba} are divisible by 44?
  1. A20
  2. B24
  3. C25
  4. D36
  5. E40

WORKED EXAMPLE

Solution

For a number to be divisible by 44, the number ba‾=10b+a\overline{ba} = 10b+a formed by its last two digits must be divisible by 44; divisibility of 10b+a10b+a and 2b+a2b+a by 44 is equivalent, so in particular aa must be even. If a∈{4;8}a \in \{4; 8\}, bb must be even — 2⋅5=102 \cdot 5 = 10 numbers; if a∈{2;6}a \in \{2; 6\}, bb must be odd — another 2⋅5=102 \cdot 5 = 10 numbers. In total, 10+10=2010+10=20 numbers (for example, 424424, 616616, 848848).
