Problem #17 · August 13, 2026

Absolute value

Find the distance between the points with coordinates −3-3 and 88 on the number line.
  1. A11
  2. B5
  3. C8
  4. D24
  5. E-11

WORKED EXAMPLE

Solution

The distance between two points on the number line equals the absolute value of the difference between their coordinates: d=∣8−(−3)∣d = |8 - (-3)|. 8−(−3)=8+3=118 - (-3) = 8 + 3 = 11, so d=∣11∣=11d = |11| = 11.
