Problem #2 · July 29, 2026

Natural numbers

If ABC‾+MN‾=FEDP‾\overline{ABC} + \overline{MN} = \overline{FEDP}, calculate the value of FM+N+AFF^{M+N} + A^{F}.
  1. A88
  2. B99
  3. C1010
  4. D1111

WORKED EXAMPLE

Solution

When a two-digit number is added to a three-digit number, the sum is at most 999+99=1098999+99=1098, so the number FEDP‾\overline{FEDP} is between 10001000 and 10981098, and F=1F=1. For the sum to have four digits, ABC‾≥1000−99=901\overline{ABC}\ge 1000-99=901 must hold, so A=9A=9. Now FM+N+AF=1M+N+91=1+9=10F^{M+N}+A^{F}=1^{M+N}+9^{1}=1+9=10.
